South Africans spend on average R688 a month‚ or 6% of their purse‚ on education‚ but black people spend more than the other races‚ the Finmark Trust said on Friday.

These findings of the Finscope South Africa 2016 consumer survey will be released on November 8 and come in the wake of the #FeesMustFall campaign‚ where university students would like to see a no-fee increase for 2017‚ as opposed to Higher Education Minister's recommendation that university might increase fees by 8%.

The study shows that total personal monthly consumption expenditure in 2016 was about R220-billion and of this spending on education was estimated at R12.2-billion.

The costs for education included school‚ university and college fees‚ transport and stationery.

Further demographic analysis of the data showed that black South Africans still bore the greatest brunt of the education costs.

“For the average black South African‚ education expenses constitute 7% of their purse – this is higher compared with other races for which the purse composition for coloured‚ Asian‚ Indian and whites are at an average of 4.3% of their purse‚” Finmark said in a statement.

Nearly 12 million black South Africans spent more than 10% of their purse on education-related expenses.

“This is further exacerbated when noting that the average income per month is R4 723‚ R6 294‚ R12 265 and R17 123 for black‚ coloured‚ Indian and white South Africans respectively. As such‚ the cost of education places a heavier burden on black South Africans‚” Finmark said.
