Spare a thought for this poor drenched koala, who was rescued from intense flooding in Australia.

Plumber Russell Latter spotted the struggling animal as waters were rising in the Adelaide Hills.

Nearby areas saw more than 120mm of rain in the preceding 24 hours.

Latter told the BBC: ‘He couldn’t get to the other side because it was flooded. So I coaxed him gently across the bridge.’

After moving the little guy to safety, Latter took a photograph of him perched on a nearby fencepost.

The koala apparently then crossed shallow floodwaters and climbed a gum tree, where he ‘looked quite happy’.

‘I’ve had a few animal rescue people tell me that they have very thick fur,’ he said.

‘They survive out in the trees all winter when it pours, pours and pours. They do rather well.’

Heavy downpours have hit parts of the south of the country, Victoria and New South Wales this week.

The huge storm has even caused mudslides on the Great Ocean Road.
