A high school teacher who was battling cancer has died just days after 400 students turned up outside his house to sing to him.

This aerial photo shows a massive sinkhole Friday, Sept. 16, 2016, in Mulberry, Fla., that opened up underneath a gypsum stack at a Mosaic phosphate fertilizer plant. Tens of millions of gallons of reprocessed water from the fertilizer plant in central Florida are likely to have seeped into the Floridan aquifer after the massive sinkhole opened up. Since 2008, Ben Ellis had been teaching Latin at Christ Presbyterian Academy in Nashville, Tennessee.

But last year, he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and his condition rapidly deteriorated.

Last week, after hearing about the pain he was going through, staff and students decided to drop everything and go to Mr Ellis’ house to show him how much he meant to them.

Mr Ellis could not hide back his tears of joy as the children serenaded him with touching hymns.

But little did they know they’d be losing him so soon.

Yesterday morning, the school announced that the much-loved Latin teacher lost his battle with cancer, just 10 days after the beautiful tribute.

The video, which was recorded on Wednesday, September 7, was viewed millions of times and was even shared by country music star Tim McGraw.

In response to his share, Mr Ellis’ father, Bob, thanked him and said: ‘Ben is my son. Through his ministry and teaching, he has positively touched countless hundreds of lives directly and many thousands indirectly.’

A parent from the school paid tribute to Mr Ellis before his death, writing that he was the ‘definition of a teacher, a role model, a servant.

‘He wrote the kids a letter telling them he is even more certain now that God is Good and with us.’
