Uganda: KCCA Striker Targets Fifth Golden Boot
Kampala — Robert Ssentongo has promised to retain his Azam Uganda Premier League 'golden boot' on his third return to 11-time champions KCCA. "Let the fans expect new and better things from me," Ssentongo, who has topscored in four seasons before said after his unveiling at Lugogo on Thursday.
Ssentongo is already walking the talk. He netted a quick first-half brace inside 21 minutes on a soggy field on his season debut in Kakindu. KCCA went on to win 3-0 for their fifth win of the season in six games keeping the holders atop the 16-team log on 15 points.
"Most strikers have already played about five games but I know I will be top scorer again," Ssentongo, released by URA after falling out with coach Keffa Kisala, said.
"That's a natural drive but I want the team to win first."
He is now a goal behind top scorer Mohammad Shaban. KCCA's next opponents are Express at Lugogo tomorrow.
KCCA coach Mike Mutebi, who first spotted Ssentongo during his early days at Kireka United in 2002, believes the forward has matured.
"From the time he came into football, he's had double figures in his career. Ssentongo has reached the perfection stage of his career and has the hunger," noted Mutebi.
"We create about six chances per match and hopefully, he will score 20 goals plus. If he scores, won't he go for Afcon in Gabon? So he's thinking of more than performing for KCCA," Mutebi added.
The last KCCA player to win the top-scorer's award was Herman Wasswa with 20 goals in 2013, seven of those in the SC Villa jersey. Ssentongo was top scorer in 2004, 2012, 2015 and last season.
