Uganda: Spartan, Lubaga Dominate ARS Tournament
Kampala — After losing last year's Kampala region Airtel Rising Stars (ARS) final 3-1 to Kabowa at Villa Park, Spartan went back to the drawing board for revitalized tactics to win this year's competition.
Their efforts were rewarded handsomely on Sunday at Wankulukuku when they beat St Mary's 1-0 to clinch the Central region ARS trophy at Wankulukuku.
"I told my boys that this was the moment to show what they have sweated for in training for a whole year. They were calm on the ball, defended well and died a little for our cause," revealed Spartan coach Farouk Kigongo, after seeing his side win their second final in four attempts.
Spartan from Namasuba, who had eliminated Life Eternal 4-3 on spot kicks on the semifinal, were made to work for their victory by a resilient St Mary's side from Nabweru that were unlucky to concede an own goal by Ismail Bugembe in the fifth minute and also had their penalty opportunity - a would be equalizer - hit the woodwork late on.
"We were just unlucky today but we showed the audience that we have talent in our team. I'm pleased that some of my boys have been selected to represent Kampala," St Mary's coach Ahmed Kigundu, said.
In the girls' category, Uganda Martyrs Lubaga swept aside Alphoenex 2-0 to emerge victors in the tourney that attracted eight teams from Kampala. Rashidah Nankya and Gloria Namugerwa scored for the dominant Lubaga side as they won the three-day tourney.
